Rate shopping only works if the quote matches the box you will hand the carrier. This walkthrough is the practical sequence we use on Instant Shipping Labels: measure, quote, pick a service you can actually tender, pay, print.
1. Addresses that scan
Use a deliverable street address. Apartment/unit belongs in the address line, not the name field. Postal/ZIP codes drive zone. Phone numbers matter for UPS and FedEx more than for a simple USPS retail drop. P.O. boxes fail on many UPS/FedEx products; if the recipient only has a box, pick a postal product that allows it.
2. Package type and dimensions
Choose Custom Box when you want every enabled carrier in the same list. Preset envelopes and Flat Rate packaging only make sense if you will actually use that packaging. Measure length, width, and height of the closed, packed carton—not the item inside. Weight is box + void fill + product. If you under-declare, the carrier can bill an adjustment you will not see at our checkout.
3. Reading the quote list
You are comparing transit product + price + drop-off reality, not brand slogans. A cheap ground rate that takes a week is not “wrong” if that is what you wanted. Time-definite air costs more because it is a different product. If an EU carrier does not appear, check origin: Deutsche Post/DPD DE want Germany, Correos Spain, Colissimo France. Canada Post wants Canada. US domestic is usually USPS, UPS, and FedEx.
4. Pay once, recover later
Card/wallets on clearnet (Stripe needs an email). Crypto shipping labels on clearnet or Tor, including no-JS. Unpaid quotes expire after a few days. After payment, save token + recovery code and use order recovery. Print barcodes at 100%—never “fit to page.”
Habits that prevent the expensive mistakes
- Weigh on a scale; kitchen estimates fail as soon as you add a second item.
- Do not mix a USPS Flat Rate box with Custom Box dimensions from a different carton.
- International: contents, value, and HS-ish descriptions must match what is in the box. See the international guide.
